About

/Caphar (b. 1995), I’m a French Lisbon based artist.

Fully self-taught, my practice has always been mural oriented. It all started while living and travelling in Central America as a young adult, where I’d trade murals for food and accomodation which led me to develop a brush-based approach and a more traditional vision first.

Back in France since 2020, I started working much more on canvases and my studio practice has grown a lot under the influence of the contemporary art scene, experimenting with photography as well as illustration.

A lot of my paintings I like to think as digital collages or electronic music. My work is photo based and I often just pick a really odd sample, something really different from the general focus of the photo shoot. I then start duplicating, blurring or drawing on top of it until it makes sense, until I find balance.

Over the years, the subjects have changed, the approach also, but what I always find myself attracted to is the absurd. Wether it is in the composition or the use of accessories, what usually triggers me is this big question mark and the beauty in making it make sense.

All of it resulting in a modern and contemporary collage with a very rendered and traditional approach.
